Yancey County is located in the northern mountains of Western North Carolina with Burnsville as the county seat. An elevation of 2,815 feet allows residents and visitors to enjoy four distinct seasons with an average temperature in January of 47 degrees and in July of 82 degrees. Yancey County has the highest average elevation of any county in North Carolina, including within its boundaries five of the highest peaks east of the Mississippi. One of these peaks is Mount Mitchell (highest point in eastern America) with an elevation of 6,684 feet. The county is skirted by the Appalachian Trail and surrounded by protected national forests.
